Deputy Stevens debated what to do as he headed home. He didn’t think Ezra Meyer was capable of such trickery, but how well did he really know the man? Sure he made a random appearance to church, seemed to do many good things, but could he really be a fake?

At the crossroad, he took a right instead of his usual left. He had to find out.

He stepped into an office and took his hat off. “Mornin’, Miss Rhonda.”

“Good morning, Deputy. What can I do for you?”

Deputy Stevens looked down and quickly took the star off his chest. “Just Michael Stevens this morning, ma’am. Is Mr. Meyer in?”

“Yes, I am,” a deep voice said. “Come in. I have a few minutes.”

Michael nodded at Miss Rhonda and went through the doorway Ezra Meyer had just been standing in.

“How can I help you?” Ezra asked as Michael closed the door.

“There’s a rumor going around and I wanted to know how much of it is true.”

Ezra’s face remained blank and Michael hurried on to tell him everything the sheriff had said without telling Ezra who had said it.

When he finished, Ezra leaned his elbows on his desk and clasped his hands together. “I did take the three children in. Titus is my son. His mother and I were married secretly thirteen years ago. A few months later, she informed me she was expecting. I hadn’t told my father about the marriage because I knew he wouldn’t approve. I couldn’t let Louisa be ostracized for being an unwed mother, so I told my father everything. The next thing I knew, I was on a train bound for a boat that would take me across the ocean for a European tour. I tried to write to Louisa, but knew it was unlikely she would get my letters.

“So, the part of me taking in some illegitimate children is true. Nothing else is. I am doing all of it, expecting nothing but their goodwill in return. I’ve still gotten things from them, even then. But it has all been food. A pastry here, half a dozen eggs there, a cup of milk or two, a lunch delivered to the office for both me and Miss Rhonda. That’s all I have gotten and it’s more than I ever expected. I know I’m not perfect. I know I can be cowardly and work too much.”

“I don’t think you’re cowardly.”

“But I am. If I wasn’t, I would have confronted my father long ago and not worried about his approval or money and gone off to find some other job somewhere else.”

Michael shrugged. “Your father was rather intimidating. I don’t blame you for not confronting him.”

Ezra crossed his arms. “Thanks. I think.”

Michael chuckled. “Thanks for being so honest with me.”

“You’re welcome. I hope it was helpful.”

“It was.” He stood up and held out his hand. “I hope the rumors don’t spread.”

Ezra shook his hand. “Thank you. Have a good day.”

“You, too.”

Michael barely acknowledged Miss Rhonda’s farewell. How could he investigate the sheriff
